The Wayne Highlands School District Special Education Department is committed to providing students with disabilities meaningful educational opportunities in a supportive, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.

Our philosophy is simple: special education is a service, rather than a place. Every student is an important member of our school community, and we believe educational programs and services should recognize each student's individual strengths, abilities, needs, and potential.

Our Commitment to Students

Wayne Highlands provides a continuum of special education programs and services from Kindergarten through graduation. Our goal is to provide eligible students with the individualized instruction, services, accommodations, and supports necessary to access educational opportunities and make meaningful progress.

Whenever appropriate to their individual educational needs, students with disabilities are provided opportunities to learn alongside their peers within the general education environment.

We believe these inclusive experiences can strengthen academic achievement while helping students develop confidence, independence, communication skills, friendships, positive social relationships, and a sense of belonging.

Individualized Educational Support

Every student is different. Special education services are therefore designed around the unique educational needs of each eligible student.

Wayne Highlands provides programs and supports for students with a variety of disabilities and educational needs in accordance with applicable federal and Pennsylvania requirements.

Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams—including parents and guardians—work collaboratively to identify appropriate goals, services, accommodations, supports, and educational placements based upon each student's individual needs.

Early Intervention and Student Support

Supporting students begins well before a special education determination.

Our schools use collaborative processes to identify students who may be experiencing academic, behavioral, communication, or other educational challenges. Teachers, administrators, specialists, and families can work together to review student information, identify appropriate interventions, monitor progress, and determine whether additional evaluation may be necessary.

When a special education evaluation is appropriate, the District works with families throughout the process to better understand the student's strengths and educational needs.

Families Are Our Partners

Parents and guardians are essential members of their child's educational team.

We value open communication, collaboration, and meaningful family participation throughout the special education process. Families possess knowledge and insight about their children that are essential when making educational decisions.

By working together, families and educators can establish shared goals, address challenges, celebrate progress, and create educational experiences that help students succeed.

A Collaborative Team

Providing effective special education services requires the combined efforts of many dedicated professionals.

Our team includes special education and general education teachers, administrators, school psychologists, counselors, speech and language professionals, related-service providers, paraprofessionals, nurses, support personnel, and other specialists who work collaboratively to address student needs.

Together, these professionals help create educational environments where students are supported academically, socially, emotionally, and developmentally.

Preparing Students for Life

Our responsibility extends beyond helping students succeed in school. We also want students to develop the skills necessary to become as independent, confident, responsible, and self-directed as possible.

As students progress through Wayne Highlands, educational planning increasingly considers their future goals and preparation for life beyond high school. Depending upon the individual student, that future may include college, career and technical education, employment, independent living, community participation, or other postsecondary opportunities.

Our goal is to help each student recognize their abilities, develop self-advocacy skills, and prepare for a meaningful and successful future.
